Baraka’s Turtle Aquarium is a unique rehabilitation center for injured sea turtles, located in a stunning natural tidal pool nestled within a cave on Nungwi Beach, in the northern part of Zanzibar. This serene and protected environment serves as a sanctuary for these incredible creatures, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim alongside them.
The aquarium itself is a small, natural grotto where injured or trapped turtles, often caught accidentally in fishing nets, are brought to recuperate before being released back into the ocean. Baraka Aquarium not only rescues these turtles but also purchases those caught by fishermen, giving them a second chance at life in the wild.
When you visit, you’ll be able to swim with the turtles in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon, feeding them nutritious seaweed or simply spending time enjoying their peaceful presence. The experience of running your fingers along their smooth shells is unforgettable. The aquarium provides plenty of seaweed for you to feed the turtles, and if you’re interested, you can also bring a snorkel to explore the underwater world and observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
While the water can sometimes appear murky in certain areas of the pond, there is a shower on-site to refresh after your swim. The pond’s depth can reach up to 2 meters, so if you’re not a confident swimmer, it’s recommended to stay at the edge or wear a life jacket for safety. Whether you’re an avid swimmer or simply want to enjoy the serene environment, Baraka’s Turtle Aquarium offers a meaningful and unforgettable experience for all visitors.
